RP1.10-01 Advanced power converter to improve fuel cell system performance

Executive Summary

This project develops a high efficiency power converter system that can improve the reliability and lower the cost of the overall system.

The objectives of this project are:

  • To develop, design and implement a more efficient conversion of power from the fuel cell to the power grid.
  • To investigate fuel cell interaction with fluctuations in the power system and how to improve its performance.
  • To investigate switching techniques in the power converter to reduce power loss.

Commencement / End Date Feb 2020 to Oct 2023
Outcomes / Impact
The design of power electronic converter topologies is considered important in fuel cell systems. Therefore, more studies on the development of new topologies for DC converters, including new switching techniques, are needed to create higher efficiencies and improve the existing switching technique. For specific applications of portable fuel cell systems, the size and energy density are considered very important.

The long-term goal of this research work is to develop a high efficiency power converter system that can improve the reliability and lower the cost of the overall system.
